A Picture is Worth 300 Words

I began my quest to photograph Coachella a few weeks ago (Dec, 2014), even though I had decided to start the project in earnest 2 years ago. I drove to Coachella early one sunlit morning, full of excitement and expectation. I decided that I would use mainly digital cameras because I had little expectation of finding images of the 'fine art' sort that I would be selling at the various art shows around the country. I just wanted to make a visual record of a region, an era that I was afraid would soon disappear. I had no illusion that all of the interesting homes, roadside businesses and buildings I'd seen as a kid in high school or even later, in the 70's and 80's when I worked in the desert, would still be in existence.

However, the truth is that even though my many days of shooting yielded numerous interesting and certainly different images than I've ever done, the rampant growth of apartment complexes and strip shopping centers had almost completely changed the face of the center of the City of Coachella. To the west and north of Coachella, it's literally wall to wall golf courses and gated housing developments in both Indio and La Quinta.
